Captain and First Mate

Ulver, Captain of the Silver Songbird, and his first mate, Auro. Definitely not your average pirates.

Captain Ulver is one of the few pirates on the seas of his world who values honor and loyalty among his crew more than strength and capability. To some people's surprise, he even has a reputation for being an extremely well-mannered bird. However, while obviously not the scariest pirate on the seas, Ulver is still among the most dangerous, should you find yourself his adversary. He's certainly not the strongest fighter or the greatest swordsman to be found, but he's fast, witty, and practically a walking combat toolbox, always carrying a bastard sword, a curved dagger, a crossbow, a metal boomerang, and a talon hook on the end of a 10-foot chain. Unlike most pirates though, Ulver does not simply sail to sink and plunder other ships and seek gold for a living. Quite honestly, he is more of a rebel than a pirate. He grew up in a nation which came to be ruled by a tyrant in his younger years, and as an adult, his plan is to build a crew of pirates and fellow rebels alike to help man a ship and retaliate. Despite his actual stance, he very much resembles a pirate, is labeled as one, and will surely go down in history known as one.

Auro is a rat of few words with some social issues, but he has no problems following the requests of his best friend and captain. While in no way a leader, Auro is entirely loyal to Ulver, and has proven on many occasions to be a true jack-of-all-trades. Intelligence, silence, dexterity, and a lack of intimidating features are his best advantages in thievery, spying, assassination in some rare cases, and much more. But don't worry - he only acts on account of the greater good (which, in his perspective, is often geared toward helping Ulver in his quest of rebellion against the tyrant of their nation). Auro is honestly not always proud of what he does, and to some people who do actually know him, this has earned him the nickname, "Guilty Auro". Overall though, he tries to keep the big picture in mind, and holds the philosophy that, "if nobody else will do what must be done, I will."

These two make a pretty great duo when it comes to just about anything pirates do on the sea, from taking on an Imperial ship to bursting out in song and flute, and just about everything in-between. The best part: They're hiring a crew.

The rules are simple: Create a character who could exist in a fantasy world and would do well aboard a pirate ship as a functional member of its crew - swordsman, deck hand, swabbie, navigator, useful pet, etc. . Humans and non-humans are allowed, as is a limited degree of magic, as long as I can approve of it. Feel free to see about bringing a character aboard, and if you do, I'll let you know when (and if) things start!

Fun trivia:
- Elver, the swashbuckler I created for a Pathfinder game, is a descendant of Ulver who was named in part after him, and eventually came to idolize and take after him. Also, the great blue bird that Mathias rides, Ulver, was named after this pirate, mostly because it would often steal food from others in its youth.
- Auro is an older character of mine that some of you may remember, though until now I've never really had a use for him. He's been on a list of older characters of mine that I want to bring back new and improved, though, and I think I can scratch him off of there now. He'll make a great first mate aboard the Songbird (and a great rat, too).
